My African Dream
-Was born on the road from Cape to Cairo - from Johannesburg to Jerusalem - from Lamu to Livingstone … from the sunrises over the Masada and Cyangugu on Lake Kivu -the Red Sea and the full moon of the Wild Coast -Mossel Bay and Dahab from Sunsets on the Pyramids of Giza - Table Mountain - Kilimanjaro and yes the Eternal rainbow over Victoria Falls … since time itself began !
A true legend is born from a journey of self discovery- an idea that crystallises in the stars above the golden silence of the desert and the greatness of authenticity.
My African dream began 42 years ago as I began my travels across the plains of Serengeti - my trek across the Sahara - the Sudan - the Sinai and the endless horizons of this vast undiscovered continent . Before ATM machines - before the Internet and before the golden age of cheap airplane tickets…
“ we drank when thirsty - ate when hungry … slept when tired … washed when water was at hand -and ate garlic now and then for the mosquitoes ! “ ( advice to me in Bulawayo in 1980) .
We read stories that inspired us like the “Iliad of Homer” - “Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy “ by Douglas Adams and “Africa on a Shoestring “ by Geoff Crowther and Tony Wheeler and found the meaning of ourselves in the BUSH TV of the camp fire in the Oneness of the nature and God.
We received guidance from love letters and notes on the Thorntree in Nairobi - random stories from other travellers on the road or at overnight stays at Madame Roches the Oxford Pension and Diani Beach.
On my return in Madagascar my father asked me “ What do you want to do with your life ?” I hadn’t thought about it seriously but answered “ I want to start a backpackers Lodge maybe a few of them !”
And so “Zoo Lodge” was born in Johannesburg -and “Shoestrings” in Victoria Falls . Ideas . Conversations . That was way back in 1991 when you could still do crazy stuff and we’re not afraid to be penniless or laughed at .
These two lodges are still around today thanks to the dedicated work of Tim Cherry my father and many others who believed in the dream - but as a traveller I had to carry on with my global travels around the world discovering everything there was to discover until I was happy - or finished writing my book. “ Universal Concepts “…
These great adventures is HOW I discovered my love for Africa and its potential and my path to sharing it with others at rainbow gatherings and in coffee shops .
Then after so many years on the road I decided to purchase a farm to ground the visions of a better Africa as Nelson Mandela said -to “ Make Poverty History !”- a dream is born in the heart over time and birthed when that time and place intersect . And home always remains inside your heart where ever you are .
That place I purchased in 2024 is in Zambia and is called “Terranova “ or NEW EARTH Farm “…a universal and spiritual home we hope to build King Solomon’s temple and grow organic food - hemp and Hopi corn.
To eat better and live better - to bring a piece of heaven to Earth through knowledge acquired in the furnaces of fire and arduous travel . Some kind of stability in this world of change and uncertainty . A DNA that lives on .
It is my African dream - this LIGHT in the darkness - the HEART of David Livingstone and many saints who believe in this wonderful continent and it’s destiny .
One I hope to see one day GOD WILLING !
I thank you and I bless you
Robin
